Description
Anaphora and problems of reference resolution have received a great
deal of attention from workers in linguistics, computational
linguistics, artificial intelligence and information retrieval for a
number of decades. Such problems have proved a major challenge for all
of these fields, and a great many differing theories and solutions have
been proposed and implemented with varying degrees of success. This
conference aims to fill a need for researchers in this field to meet.
Our hope is that this meeting will allow all of the different strands
of work to be identified, with a view to producing an up-to-date
review of the field.
To this end, a conference will take place from the 16th to the 18th
November 2000, at Lancaster University, UK, organized jointly by the
Department of Linguistics, Lancaster University and the North West
Centre for Linguistics, and supported by the Linguistics Association of
Great Britain. This conference is a follow up to the highly successful
DAARC conferences held at Lancaster in 1996 and 1998, and the annual
conferences of the North West Centre. Our aim as ever is to encourage a
cross-fertilization of ideas between theoretical linguistics, corpus
linguistics and computational linguistics.

As the conference is happening during term time at Lancaster, we cannot
provide campus accommodation. However, there is plentiful accommodation
locally, ranging from modest bed and breakfast establishments to
hotels. Lancaster Tourism provides a booking service on +44 1524 32878
which we recommend delegates use. Be clear on the phone that you need
to travel to and from the University daily during your stay.

This page also contains information about which buses to use to reach
campus from the city centre. Note that if you stay at Lancaster House
Hotel, then you are a five to ten minute walk from the conference venue
(though the hotel is comparatively expensive).

When booking accommodation, do not try to stay in the lake district
unless you intend to hire a car. Although quite close, train and bus
connections between Lancaster and the lake district are slow, and in
November can be unreliable. Similarly, although beautiful, the Lune
valley is difficult to access by public transport from the University.
While cheap accommodation options may be found in Morecambe, the bus
ride from Morecambe to the University is lengthy (over one hour) though
it is regular. By far the best option is to stay in Lancaster city, or
at Lancaster house hotel. Hotels to the south of Lancaster (Ellel,
Forton etc) are a possibility, though you would certainly want to
liaise with the hotel/B&B about the bus times of buses 40, 41 and 42.
Note that these buses only stop on the very fringe of campus generally,
and you will have a steep climb up Bailrigg hill to reach campus if you
use these buses. however, if you do so, ensure that the driver knows
that you want to get off at 'the University gates' - we use scare
quotes for although this is the term use to refer to the main entrance
to the University, there are in fact no gates.
Once you have reached the University campus, use the map at:

to find your way about. The conference centre, where DAARC2000 is to be
held, is between Bowland and Lonsdale colleges.
Payment Details:
Fees are payable in Pounds Sterling or US Dollars. PLEASE MAKE CHEQUES
PAYABLE TO 'LANCASTER UNIVERSITY'. Sterling money orders can also be
used for payment, and must be made payable to 'LANCASTER UNIVERSITY'.
US dollars/cheques in US dollars are also acceptable, using a fixed
exchange rate of 1.45 $US to the Pound. Unfortunately, we cannot
accept credit card payments. You may pay at the conference in cash.
