<s id="NEST_Vanno.s3">Nå kan den igjen bli symbol - for et vannskille i russisk politikk og samfunnsliv.</s> <s id="NEST_Van_135en.s3">Now it might once again become a symbol – for a crossroads in Russian politics and society.</s>

<s id="NEST_Vanno.s4">Som ved ethvert vannskille er imidlertid den elva som her har sitt utløp både liten og unnselig.</s> <s id="NEST_Van_135en.s4">As with all crossroads, the road leading up to it is small and insignificant.</s>

<s id="NEST_Vanno.s6">I motsetning til hva vi og russerne er vant til, opptrer de russiske mediene og enkelte av landets politikere som direkte talsmenn for og formidlere av befolkningens fortvilelse og vrede.</s> <s id="NEST_Van_135en.s6">Contrary to what both we Norwegians and the Russians are used to, the Russian media and some of the country’s politicians are acting as the direct spokesmen for and conveyers of the people’s frustration and wrath.</s>

<s id="NEST_Vanno.s7">Og anklagene rettes mot den russiske og sovjetiske tradisjon av løgn, fortielse og forakt for enkeltmennesket.</s> <s id="NEST_Van_135en.s7">And the accusations are targeted towards the Russian and Soviet tradition of lies, withholding of information, and contempt for individuals.</s>

<s id="NEST_Vanno.s8">Katastrofen i Barentshavet er den tredje ulykken av tilsvarende omfang som på knapt 15 år har rammet Russland.</s> <s id="NEST_Van_135en.s8">The catastrophe in the Bering Sea is the third accident of similar magnitude to occur in Russia in barely 15 years.</s>

<s id="NEST_Vanno.s9">Tsjernobyl-ulykken og ubåten Komsomolets' forlis var omgitt med samme nøling, feilinformasjon og prestisjehensyn som havariet av Kursk.</s> <s id="NEST_Van_135en.s9">The accident at Chernobyl and the submarine Komsomolet’s breakdown were surrounded by the same hesitation, wrongful information and attempts to save face as the Kursk-incident.</s>

<s id="NEST_Vanno.s10">Men aldri tidligere har befolkningen fått servert myndighetenes forakt for enkeltmennesket så klart som nå.</s> <s id="NEST_Van_135en.s10">But never before has the public been shown the authorities’ contempt for individuals as clearly as now.</s>

<s id="NEST_Vanno.s11">Det måtte en korrupt embetsmann i Nordflåten til for at navnene på de forulykkede skulle offentliggjøres.</s> <s id="NEST_Van_135en.s11">It wasn’t until a corrupt official of the Northern Fleet came forward that the names of the deceased were made public.</s>

<s id="NEST_Vanno.s12">De pårørende fikk først ikke økonomisk hjelp til å reise til ulykkesstedet.</s> <s id="NEST_Van_135en.s12">The friends and family didn’t get economic help to go see the place of the accident at first.</s>

<s id="NEST_Vanno.s13">Mens myndighetene påsto at redningsluka var for ødelagt til å kunne rikkes, ble den åpnet av norske dykkere.</s> <s id="NEST_Van_135en.s13">While the authorities were claiming that the rescue hatch was too badly damaged to budge, Norwegian divers were able to open it.</s>
