    PROGRAMME

    The sixteenth cycle of the Vilem Mathesius Lecture Series, organized by
    the Vilem Mathesius Centre for Research and Education in Semiotics and
    Linguistics (Charles University), will be held in Prague, Czech Republic,
    from March 19 until 30, 2001. The scientific programme will consist of
    the following invited courses (for preliminary time-schedule see below):

    * Nicoletta Calzolari (University of Pisa, Italy): Semantics and
    Lexicon in Corpora

    * Wolfgang Dressler (University of Vienna, Austria): Morphopragmatics:
    A New Subfield Integrating Morphology and Pragmatics

    * Julia Hirschberg (AT&T, New Jersey, USA): tba (topic: Sentence
    Prosody)

    * Frederick Jelinek (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore,
    USA): Language Modelling for Speech Recognition

    * Aravind Joshi (University of Pennsylvania, USA): tba (topic:
    Grammars and Corpora)

    * Martin Kay (Stanford University, Palo Alto, USA): title to be
    confirmed (topic: Computational Linguistics)

    * Helmut Schnelle (Universitaet Bochum, Germany): Language in the
    Brain

    * Oliviero Stock (Trento, Italy): to be confirmed (topic: Applied
    Natural Language Processing)

    * Ken Turner (Univerity of Sussex, Brighton, England): Conditionals
    (from different points of view)

    * Hans Uszkoreit (Universitaet des Saarlandes, Saarbruecken, Germany):

    * David Yarowski (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA): tba
    (topic: Stochastic Methods)

    In addition, the following professors from the Czech Republic have
    been invited: Jan Hajic, Eva Hajicova, Frantisek Cermak, Libuse Duskova,
    Jarmila Panevova, Jaroslav Peregrin, Petr Sgall.

    PARTICIPATION
    --------------------------------------------

    For participants from post-communist countries, a limited number of
    grants is available, which would cover the tuition fee and
    accommodation, with a small amount of pocket money. In addition, we
    hope to be able to contribute towards the travel costs (up to 200
    euro), to those grantees who have no other means for supporting their
    trip. The deadline for application for the grants is **DECEMBER 15,
    2001**.

    The participation fee for VMC 16 is USD 350, which includes tuition
    fee, accommodation, and lunches. In order to ensure accommodation,
    (paying) participants should register before **FEBRUARY 17, 2001**.
